Ethereum Outperforms as MiCA Implementation Draws Institutional Flows Back to Regulated Venues
Ether rose above $4,400, outperforming bitcoin for a third straight session, as full MiCA application in Europe and steady ETF creations drew capital back to regulated digital-asset venues.
Ethereum outperformed bitcoin again Friday, with ether rising more than 3% to trade above $4,400 while bitcoin reclaimed the $82,000 area. The second-largest asset's outperformance — its third consecutive session of relative strength — has coincided with a notable shift in where European institutions are willing to hold crypto exposure.
The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation reaches full application across the European Union at year-end, and the authorised crypto-asset service provider registry has expanded meaningfully over the past month. Several large asset managers have begun routing euro-denominated digital-asset flows through MiCA-licensed venues rather than offshore exchanges — a compliance-driven reallocation that disproportionately benefits assets with deep regulated-futures markets like ether.
U.S. spot ether ETFs have also stabilised after a mixed summer. Net creations this week were modestly positive, and staking-yield products — still not available in U.S. spot ETF wrappers — continue to draw institutional interest through separately managed accounts in Europe and Asia.
"Regulation is finally showing up as a flow variable, not just a headline," said Ricardo Alvarez, head of digital assets at Halcyon Trading. "MiCA gives European allocators a rulebook. Once the rulebook exists, the due-diligence queue clears — and that capital is sticky in a way that momentum-driven flows are not."
On-chain activity supports the move. Ethereum's fee burn has tracked higher as real-world asset tokenisation volumes expanded, and the network's staking entry queue has lengthened after several weeks of net exits. Layer-2 activity is near record levels even as transaction costs on the base layer remain contained.
Risks remain concentrated on the macro side. Ether's beta to the Nasdaq-100 is, if anything, higher than bitcoin's, and a renewed December Fed hike repricing would likely hit the complex broadly. Technical analysts point to $4,150 as the first meaningful support below current prices, with $4,800 — the September swing high — as the next upside reference.
